Hi Charlotte,

It is very important as a designer to have an understanding of design history and style. This understanding helps us relate to and influence contemporary styles today. A good understanding of precedent is the foundations to proficient design.

You have selected a good range of architectural styles and your descriptions are quite good, referencing the materials used and the decorative features. I suggest also considering other influences such as economical and technological influences during that era that could have persuaded material selection, building systems and processes. This is relevant to all eras but particularly relevant where new technologies allowed for larger singular panes of glazing and steel. When considering modern architectural style, it is important to think about current issues of sustainability and energy efficiency.

Also, when we look at architectural style is useful to think about what has influenced this design and how the exterior architecture can have bearing on the interior design.

When you have time try to find some modern examples and identify the characteristics of the architectural style particularly the use of modern day materials and building systems and the consideration of energy efficiency.

Try to continue to identify and understand other buildings you may come across in the future and also find other styles that you have not yet looked at. It is also a good idea to familiarize yourself with prominent buildings and famous architects. As an interior designer this is useful knowledge to have.
